Glasgow sprawls over the wide lower Clyde valley and hills rise on either side: to the north, the beautiful Loch Lomond – escape from town in half an hour or so; to the south rising moorland and hills. The city is old, dating back at least to the time of patron saint Kentigern in the 6th century. The magnificent Gothic cathedral is ancient indeed, dating back to the 12th century. The university was founded in the 1400s. Since then the ‘dear green place’ grew into the ‘second city of the Empire’ and was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution. From trains to Cunard’s most glamorous Queens, Clyde-built was famous.
Today the city has re-emerged as a financial, conference, educational and tourism centre. Greater Glasgow has around 2 million residents. Leading guide books rate it very highly indeed. For such a manly big city, Glasgow has long had a soft spot for the arts and culture. It is, in fact, and unquestionably, a major European cultural centre. The national ballet, opera and orchestras of Scotland are based here – and not in the capital, Edinburgh (which is just 40 minutes away by train so ideal to visit when here!).
The city’s newly-refurbished Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum is decidedly world class and has the finest municipal art collection in the UK outside London. And that’s before you turn to the remarkable Burrell Collection Gallery. Or the many others. There’s the Charles Rennie Mackintosh link – that pioneer of Art Nouveau.
Music, from Celtic folk and international to rock and indie or symphonic and grand: Glasgow’s a hub of creativity and performance excitement. Festivals celebrate every type of music from Scottish roots and world bagpipe competitions, in halls and in the open air, to grand opera and philharmonic excellence.
The key is to do your research, plan ahead, and get the most out of your visit. Local what’s on magazine The List is essential reading. The links below will all assist, too.

Winter and early spring are indeed the ideal times to be diving into Glasgow’s cultural goings-ons. There are festivals to attend, galleries and exhibitions to visit, and the whole main-season programmes of opera, ballet, orchestras and bands playing at the SECC, Clyde Auditorium, Fruitmarket or smaller venues.
Remember that Loch Lomond and The Trossachs areas of great scenic beauty are part and parcel of any well-planned break to Glasgow. When there’s snow on the mountains and peace in the forests this region can offer a New England-type escape. And it’s all right on the city’s doorstep.

Our goal is simply to guide you our reader to the hotel best matched to your requirements. We do so by providing loads of trustworthy information from our own research - plus, in that unique HotelReview™ way, we publish the views of other respected guides. We do our best to encourage and highlight quality performance from hotels and their staff. Hotels receive enquiries direct from this site and no commissions are paid. Hotels can opt, if they are invited, to pay for their Look & Book Box™ to be activated, which adds features to their Review page such as links to their booking system. This pays for the website service, and has proved very successful indeed for hotels.
